Hermine May, mezzosoprano

The Romanian-born Mezzo-Soprano Hermine May, has won many international Opera competitions including : Bundeswettbewerb Gesang and  Liederkranz Foundation – New York. She started her career as a member of the ensemble at the Deutsche Oper Berlin. Subsequently, she established herself  internationally with roles of the lyric repertoire. Recently, she has sung the roles of Carmen, Kundry, Brangäne, Venus, Dalilah and Azucena.

She has performed under the baton of Zubin Mehta – Magdalene in „ Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg“ at the Maggio Musicale Florence: Zemlinsky Maeterlinck –Lieder  with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra in Tel Aviv and Beethoven‘s 9th Symphony. Other important conductors with whom she has performed include Raffael Frühbeck de Burgos, Nello Santi, Pinchas Steinberg, Friedemann Layer, Gianluigi Gelmetti, Ralf Weikert and Ulf Schirmer. Hermine has sung at La Scala, Milan, and the opera houses of Turin, Rome, Genoa, Verona, Naples, Copenhagen, Strasbourg, Nice, Graz, Shanghai and Hong Kong.

On the concert platform, she has had great success with works of Gustav Mahler, the Verdi-Requiem, Alto-Rhapsody  of Brahms and Wagner Wesendonck Lieder.

Hermine May’s CD recordings include Bellini’s Il Pirata with Lucia Aliberti conducted by Marcello Viotti, Schubert’s Mass in E-Flat with Jonas Kaufmann, Hermann Prey and Deon van der Walt under the baton of Sylvain Cambreling and Carl Loewe  Die drei Wünsche. DVD-Productions of Carmen und Aida/Amneris demonstrate her creative power on stage.

Last year Hermine May sang the mezzo-part of the Verdi-requiem under the baton of Mo. Teodor Currentzis and MusicAeterna on a tour through Europe (Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, Grand Theatre de Geneve, Grand Theatre de Provence, Konzerthaus Vienna etc.). At the Guangzhou Opera House she sang Ulrica in Verdi’s „Ballo in Maschera“ and Maddalena in „Rigoletto“.

In 2020 she will be Ulrica in „Ballo in Maschera” in Wuhan, China; and Brangäne in “Tristan und Isolde” at the new “Musikfestspiele Königswinkel”/ Festspielhaus Füssen in Germany.
